New Blog, Same Me.

Well, I’ve gone and done it. I’ve started a blog I actually intend to maintain. After many years of keeping my thoughts to myself (/irony), I have decided to publish them online. I hope you agree with some of them. If you don’t, I hope you’ll tell me why so we can figure out who’s right.

McCain Is Vocal on War, but Silent on Son’s Service

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/06/us/politics/06mccain.html?ex=1365134400&en=3541050a4ed62198&ei=5124&partner=permalink&exprod=permalink

What better way to initiate my contribution to the new media than by attacking the flagrag of the old media? It is well known among political junkies that John McCain’s son has recently returned from a tour in Iraq. Just as well known is Sen. McCain’s oft-stated desire that his son’s service not be turned into a political issue.

When informed that the above NYT story was in the works, the McCain camp issued this statement:

“The McCain campaign objects strongly to this intrusion into the privacy of Senator McCain’s son. The children of presidential candidates in this election cycle should be afforded the same respect for their privacy that the children of President Bush and President and Senator Clinton have been afforded.”

Naturally, the McCain family’s request for privacy was ignored by the NYT; in fact, the article quotes the above objection before patting itself on the back for withholding recent photographs and details about his service… “[t]o protect” him. Only at the NYT would refraining from willfully endangering a military officer be an admirable example of journalistic restraint.

The more the NYT does this sort of thing, the more they remind Senator McCain that, while he may be their favorite Republican, that still leaves him approximately one notch above Sith Lord status in their mind.
